Newman Projection Series: Video 2
This tutorial video shows how to draw a Newman Projection from a Sawhorse Projection of the butane molecule, starting from both staggered and eclipsed conformations.
Also explained are the different energy levels attained my rotating the molecule in 60 degree increments to 360, and plotted on a potential energy diagram.

Very helpful! One question: When doing the eclipse newman projection, I sometimes put the rear carbon’s bond (the substs attached to the back carbon) coming from the front or from behind the front carbon’s bonds ( i do it as i see from my model) but it was different from your placement of those bonds. Does it matter if the rear carbon’s bond are coming from the front or from behind the front carbon (because the subst should be aligned in eclipse molecule so i would guess it doesn’t matter?)..
I know it sounds confusing but hopefully you know what i am talking about.

the video was great but i have one question at the end when graphing the front of molecule the ch3 was position on top but before it was position at the bottom.
George says
does it matter where the front of the molecule is positioned
Leah4sci says
Not at all. Since molecules rotate in space what is the front carbon now will be the rear carbon later
Leah4sci says
What’s your question?
steising says
why do you change between ch3 and h3c
Leah4sci says
Same thing drawn from the other direction. H3C implies 3 H atoms bound to C bound to the parent chain but from the left. CH3 has a C to the right of the parent chain and 3 H atoms attached to it

so nice

Thank you Israa

I am so grateful that you did this series, it had really helped me a lot. It helps you understand it instead of memorizing what is going on.

Thank you, I’m glad my videos are helping you understand the concepts
