Hi Leah, the videos help me so much, but I was ask to draw an isopentyl cation, isopentyl-2 butyl cation and a 2-methyl-2-butyl cation and rank them, and I’m so confused.
I can tell that pent is 5 Carbon, yl is a sub and iso look like the Mercedes sing, but can’t drew it.
aiesha basha says
Hi,
can this also be called 5-isopropyl nonane?
-thanks
Devin Alexander Ellis says
At 1:54 could you not name the methyl propyl branch isopropyl instead of 2-methylpropyl ?
Jen says
This video helped clarify my questions on the structures. Thank you!
Mazin Nasralla says
Regarding 4-(1-methylethyl)-octane couldn’t you drop the 1 as that’s the only place the methyl group can go? If in doubt is it always best to add a number?
What do you use as reference? I went to IUPAC website but didn’t find it very useful.
I like your videos. To the point.
Leah4sci says
I’ve seen it named without a number. I personally would keep the number to avoid any potential confusion
sanket says
Much more interesting and understandable than a 4 roomed packed class.
Thank u for this video, I was having a trouble in understanding this topic.
Well now I am surely getting 6 marks in my finals..
Leah4sci says
glad I can help Sanket
Clarice says
It’s not 4-(ethyl-1-methyl) because of the alphabetical rule?
Leah4sci says
Be careful Clarice. Ethyl is considered the parent of the branch and so is not alphabetized with the substituents ON the branch
